Geiranger, Norway - July 7, 2023 - Day 6

We woke up this morning in the town of Geiranger (red dot on the map).  The ship traversed the narrow fjord during the night.

Geiranger is an UNESCO World Heritage site and has spectacular scenery.  Lonely Planet named it the best travel destination in Scandinavia.  The town is located at the tip of the fjord. It is the 3rd largest cruise port in Norway and 150+ cruise ships visit this tiny town each year.

We were lucky to dock at the Seawalk which is a three-segment articulated floating pier which folds up against the edge when not in use. It is 774 ft long and 15 ft wide and sits on 10 pontoons.

RIB Boat

Our excursion for the day, was a ride in a RIB (rubber inflatable boat) boat back along the fjord. We first had to put on a full body suit to protect us from the water, although the only water we encountered was a bit of mist when we got close to one of the waterfalls.

There are numerous waterfalls including the famous “7 Sisters” with “The Suitor” directly across from it.

We passed scattered houses along the way.  Most of these are historic farms, many dating back to the 1600s.  Most are now abandoned or serving as summer houses, located up and down the steep sides of the fjords. They can only be accessed by steep hiking trails.  The steep cliffs don't contain much arable land, thus the scattered cliffside farms.

"Geiranger is under constant threat from landslides from the mountain Åkerneset into the fjord. A collapse would cause a tsunami that could destroy downtown Geiranger. For this reason, sirens have been installed to warn residents if a landslide should occur." (Wikipedia)

Geiranger is where the 2015 Norwegian disaster movie "The Wave" was filmed...depicting a fictional version of the above event.

The ship sailed at 4 PM so we sat on our balcony and watched the scenery along the fjord.

The ship's entertainment tonight was Jon Courtenay, the winner of Britain’s 2020 You’ve Got Talent.  He is part comedian, part piano player and very entertaining.
